In another incident of ragging rearing its ugly head in the city, a 19-year-old first-year student of a reputed engineering college on Hosur Road was allegedly abducted by a dozen of his second-year seniors and beaten up badly on the night of June 23 for complaining to the college authorities against the group who had reportedly resorted to ragging on a few previous occasions as well.

The victim is Jerard K James, a native of Neeleswaram in Kalady, Kerala. Jerard claims that around 9:30 pm on Monday, he was returning to his room in Hongasandra along with two of his friends after having dinner. A dozen seniors and some other unidentified men pounced on him and dragged him into a Tempo Traveller. He was then taken to a large field in Chandapura under Anekal police limits. He claims he was kicked and beaten on his head, stomach, face, and back until 3 am. The seniors, he says, held a knife to his throat and threatened to kill him if he approached the police.

The gang left the injured victim outside Kavya Hospital in Hongasandra, where he underwent treatment  for a day. After being discharged, he approached us and filed a complaint against 8-10 of his seniors, whom he was able to identify. He has provided us with their names and numbers, but all of their phones are switched off and they are not found in their hostels or rooms. The college authorities have also been notified and they have ensured that they will take separate action against the boys," said an investigating officer from the South East division police.

Police suspect that the alleged ragging could be due to a girl. "The victim and his seniors are all natives of Kerala, so the possibility of a clash with locals has been ruled out. At present, the
students
have examinations going on, but the accused seem to be absconding. Meanwhile, the victim has also gone back to his hometown to recuperate for a few weeks," the officer added.

Jerard and a few of his friends had reportedly complained to the head of their department and a few other college authorities about ragging by the same seniors a few days ago. This is said to have enraged the boys, who vowed revenge and then allegedly assaulted Jerard, the police said.

Further investigations are on.
