Colleges gear up to curb ragging TNN | Jun 23, 2014, 12.49AM IST

GURGAON: Ahead of the new academic year, colleges in the city are planning to organize special awareness programmes for students to put an end to ragging. The agenda is to make students aware of the ill-effects of the menace. Students will be told about the various ways to report ragging.

"There is a need for an awareness drive so that anti-social elements in college can be reported and action can be taken against them," Sushma Chaudhary, principal, Government PG College, Sector 9, said.

R K Yadav, principal, Dronacharya Government College, said that ragging is not only limited to physical injuries, but any kind of mental and emotional trauma also comes under ragging. "Strict action will be taken against students indulging in ragging. The students can be suspended or expelled. Their scholarships can be cancelled. An FIR can also be filed against these students," he said.It is important to report ragging because students who indulge in ragging are the ones who need help. Dr Jyoti Kapoor, consultant psychiatrist at Paras Hospital, suggested that to combat ragging, an awareness campaign should be designed to benefit both the seniors and the newcomers. "Ragging is almost like a tradition. Newcomers who go through the bitter experience of ragging do the same to their juniors next year. It is just like the tradition of dowry. We need to promote interaction between seniors and newcomers on the very first day," she said.

Colleges claim that they have taken enough measures to spread awareness on ragging. They have active anti-ragging committees, comprising members from college administration, students and police, to keep a regular check on the students.
