Basically, ‘Freshers’ Day’ is meant to allay the fears ofstudents and parents with regard to ragging related nuisance in the colleges. It has now developed its rootsto address various issues concerning the students.
During the transition from school to college, the students undergo dramatic changes.
The gathering is more like an enabling function that helps students develop a rapport with their seniors for a bright future.
The college authorities take advantage of the day to inform the various facilities available in the campus, besides helping them know the faculty. “We know the pulse of the new students and we address every challenge they will be facing during their stay in the college on the very first day,” says K. Anbarasu, Principal of National College.
Academicians, students, and parents say that the Freshers’ Day is a step towards checking the ragging menace, besides enabling the new comers to gain confidence.
All the colleges
have given stern warning against those indulging in ragging. “That apart, we obtain a declaration from each and every student, expressing their consent to desist from ragging,” says Mr. Anbarasu.
The importance of bridge course is explained on the occasion, adds Mr. Anbarasu. The best thing to happen to the students in recent years is the Freshers’ Day, says R. Panchanadhan, former Professor of English, Jamal Mohamed College. It provides an opportunity to know about the institution they are going to for the next few years, he says.
For M. Dineshkumar, a second year student of EEE of Saranathan Engineering College, the Freshers’ Day will ever remain etched in his mind. “To our surprise, seniors moved freely with us and this has paved way to enjoy our college life,” he adds.
